Current Rating Per Contact and Derating
The current rating depends on the connector series, contact size, and plating.
Full-size XLR-style contacts handle more current than mini XLR contacts.
DC power plugs are usually rated for a few amps at low voltage.
Always check the exact rating on the Switchcraft datasheet for your part.
The wire gauge must match or exceed the load the contact will carry.
When many contacts carry current simultaneously, each must be derated.
Higher room temperature lowers the safe current per contact.
Tight bundles trap heat, so the current should be reduced further.
Long cable runs cause a voltage drop, which may require a thicker wire.
We run the numbers for you and suggest a safe margin for your design.
